Be extra careful of treating patients who are pregnant.

Initial pain management should be limited to non-pharmacologic means such as reassurance, rest, hot or cold applications, positioning, stretching exercises, massage, ultrasound therapy, TENS, relaxation therapy and biofeedback. If pain does not respond, drugs may be prescribed carefully.

Medication may be allowed but it should be limited and only when necessary.

Acetaminophen and codeine may be used in pregnancy.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen and aspirin may be considered during the first trimester only. After the first trimester, these medicines may cause maternal and fetal bleeding.
